An important part in the field of aquaculture is controlling the state of the cages. Echo sounders is an aid in surveillance and observing what is going on under the surface, but what kind of informatione exactly does an echosounder provide, and how could the total state of the cage be observed through few measurments? Through mathematical modelling of the behaviour of the fish and mathematical modelling of the echo sounder, it will be investigated if echograms from real aquaculture facilities could be assimilated into the mathematical model to observe the state of a cage, and changing the number og measurments and placement of these will affect this. Based on a litterature study of what methods assimilation of point measurements of distributed models are available, a clear option to to this is the Ensemble Kalman Filter. However the mathematical model of the fish does not represent the behaviour of the fish in a good enough manner, and needs further development. The models has nor been tested on the scale that is Ocean Farm 1, og data from echo sounders here will not be directly comparable to simulated echograms. On the other hand it is shown that for smaller scale simulations a limited number of echo sounders could observe the dynamics of the cage as long as the observation time is long enough.
