Y SCHOOL PUPILS COMPOSING WITH GARAGEBAND ON IPAD A music educational study of performative stop-moments in a critical design theoretical perspective The debate about the use of digital technologi in general and particularly tablets in school has been ongoing in recent years and is still in question. The iPad and GarageBand technology has been embraced by many music teachers who believe this technology contributes to increased mastery and motivation among students. At the same time, critics claim that the technology contributes to simplifying music-related activities in such a way that the knowledge content and values of the subject are threatened. However, there is little research that has examined the iPad and GarageBand technology in a music educational context. This research project seeks to contribute to critical awareness of digital technological music education with iPad and GarageBand. The analyses of the study show that students who composed music with GarageBand on iPad faced a number of different challenges related to a broad spectrum of specialized understandings of the many semiotic modalities present in music, and that the students encountered challenges when facing several features of the technology. Understanding music as a multimodal complex involves recognizing that different constituents of music have different forms of materiality, operate within different dimensions, are perceived through different senses and expressed through different forms of action associated with different forms of knowledge. iPad and GarageBand technology require certain types of musical skills, understandings and actions while at the same time simplifying, supporting and even taking over musical acts. The findings also show that the technology influenced how the students made choices. When they encountered unknown routes, they still tried out performative actions and made choices emanating from the affects they experienced accompanying the actions. That is how they made creative musical choices based on knowledge produced in the very same moment. The central research questions have sought to investigate what kind of knowledge is at play and how the technology impacts when students compose with GarageBand on iPad, as well as how their compositions can be regarded as knowledge production. The data material was generated through a micro ethnographic fieldstudy where eighth-grade composers composed with GarageBand on the iPad. From a critical design theoretical point of view, the material has been analyzed using traditional music theory, design theory and multimodality, popular music analysis and performative inquiry.nb_NO
