The development of Computer Generated Images (CGIs) that are indistinguishable from photographs is opening new opportunities for designers and communicators everywhere. Photorealism removes limitations and allows computer visualizers to utilize the established language of photography when communicating their message, whilst avoiding many of the practical, logistical and economical hurdles faced by photographers. In this thesis I will explore how product CGIs can move beyond studio simulations on white backgrounds and approach a more substantial aesthetic that goes beyond the appearance of the product. Through analysis of a wide array of CGIs and photographs from different fields, I am able to discern an aesthetic direction, defined by the parameters authenticity and narrative depth, which is postulated to create images that are experienced as more captivating and realistic to the viewer. The process of applying this aesthetic direction through the creation of a photorealistic product visualization of the outdoor bench Edo is then presented.en
