dc.description.abstract | The literature within the field of social movement studies often assumes that the state reacts
proportionally to the behaviour of protest movements, without any especially deeper
investigation of the politics of these movements as a possible factor. Through a case study of
two recent U.S. movements with relatively similar behaviour, I assess whether the
proportionality in the response from the authorities is influenced by the political content of the
movements. The conclusion is that there seems to be no clear influence, at least in the
examined cases and their comparison.
