The purpose of the assignment is to find the best dosage and mixing intensity for N-Sep when testing wastewater from the treatment plant on Aspøya. The testing was performed with several different coagulants and the results was compared. The coagulants used for the tests was 2 metal coagulants, PAX33 and PIX318, and a cationic coagulant N-Sep. PAX33 is an aluminium based chemical and PIX318 is an iron based chemical. The objective of the tests is to compare the coagulants and find out which one works best in combination with mechanical cleansing. Experimental tests were performed and results from the experiments indicated that different test methods had to be used for the different coagulants. Two different methods were used, one with 20 minutes of sedimentation time and others without. The mixing time for all the experiments was set to 15 seconds, but the mixing intensity varied. The results showed that the dose 6.0 ml / l N-Sep mixed in with the mixing intensity of 800 rpm, gave the highest purification efficiency of the wastewater. N-Sep in combination with mechanical cleansing made the wastewater pure enough to meet the requirement of 50% reduction of suspended solids (SS) and 20% reduction of biochemical oxygen demand. N-Sep was tested with and without sedimentation time. An assessment was made that the coagulant works equally well or better without sedimentation time and does not need a sedimentation tank. The metal coagulants received negative purification results when tested with the method without sedimentation and an assessment was made that these coagulants do not function without sedimentation. When the sedimentation method was used, both the metal coagulants gave high purification results. Both metal coagulants yielded a higher degree of purification efficiency with the reduction of SS and BOF5, than N-Sep. To implement the coagulants the plant must install a sedimentation tank. This is both costly and require large space. In evaluation of all the results it was concluded that N-Sep was best suited for the combination with mechanical cleaning, because the coagulant creates strong flocs, it reacts quickly, and does not need a sedimentation tank.
