'Jump Scare', mer enn et billig triks?

Abstract

Virkemidlet ‘Jump Scare’ har hatt en sentral rolle innen grøssersjangeren helt siden det ble mer populært å bruke teknikken i slasherfilmene på 80-tallet. Bruken av virkemidlet har blant annet ført til en diskusjon om at teknikken bare er et billig triks for å skremme folk, og at med en overdreven bruk så kan det føre til at man blir «tatt ut» av filmen. På bakgrunn av denne diskusjonen, vil oppgaven diskutere og analysere bruken av ‘Jump Scare’ ved å bruke eksempler fra moderne grøsserfilmer som It og A Quiet Place. Oppgaven bygger sin teori rundt lyddesign, karakterengasjement og grøsser-teori og vil bruke dette som et argument for opplevelsen av virkemidlet. Basert på oppgavens komparative analyse av empirien, vil jeg trekke konklusjoner for hvordan bruken av ‘Jump Scare’ påvirker opplevelsen av en grøsserfilm.

The 'Jump Scare' technique has been central for the horror genre since it became popular using it in slasher films during the 80's. The usage of the technique has provoked a discussion about rather the technique is just a cheap trick to scare people, and by overusing it is something that will "take you out" of the movie. Based on this discussion, this thesis will discuss and analyze the usage of 'Jump Scare', by using examples from the modern horror films such as It and A Quiet Place. This thesis will use sound design theory, character engagement, horror theory and use this as arguments of the technique, and how it affects the the experience of the horror movie.
