Motivasjon i engelskfaget: Er læreboka ei hindring?

Abstract

Det er høg bruk og tillit til læreboka av norske lærarar i engelskundervisninga. Ein kan hevde at læreboka blir for hyppig nytta i engelskundervisninga, og at det kan vere uheldig, da elevane sin motivasjon til å lære engelsk kan bli svekka. Denne oppgåva vil kaste lys over om undervisning der læreboka er i fokus kan føre til mangel på motivasjon. Undersøkingsspørsmålet lyder:

Kan undervisning basert berre på læreboka i engelskfaget ha negativ innverknad på eleven sin motivasjon?

Det vil i denne samanhengen bli presentert teori om motivasjon, som vidare vil bli satt opp mot observasjonar frå undervisning der engelskverket blir nytta, samt undervisning der det ikkje blir nytta. For å forsøke å belyse problemstillinga til oppgåva, vil det bli nytta kvalitativ metode, derunder observasjon. Det var ei gruppe på 30 elevar frå 8.trinn som vart observerte i forbinding med denne oppgåva. Det var gjort fleire interessante observasjonar som kan indikere at motivasjonen blant elevane blir svekka under lærebokstyrte engelsktimar. Oppgåva gir ikkje eit direkte og konkret svar på problemstillinga, men ho kan støtte tidligare undersøkingar og forsking som er blitt gjort om elevar sin motivasjon i engelskfaget.

Norwegian teachers often use the course book when teaching the English subject. One might say that the teachers might be too dependent on the course book, and that it might affect the pupils motivation in learning the English language. This essay will try to find out if the lack of motivation in the English subject can have something to do with the teachers’ use of the coursebook. The research question is:

Can lessons based on only the coursebook in the English subject have negative impact on the pupils motivation?

Motivational theory will be presented in this essay. Observations from English lessons where the coursebook has been used, and lessons where it has not been used will also be presented. In order to try to answer the research question, there has been used qualitative method (observation). A group of 30 pupils from 8th grade was observed during these English lessons, and a lot of interesting findings were made. A lot of the findings can indicate that the pupils motivation is weakened during the lessons based only on the coursebook. This essay will does not give a direct and concrete answer to the research question, but it can possibly support research about pupils and their motivation that has been made earlier on.
