Freaks and Religion: A study of Homosexuality, Christianity and Innocence in Connection to the American Ideal of Society in James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room

Abstract

I romanen Giovanni's Room av James Bladwin blir leseren introdusert til en jeg-person som strever med sin seksualitiet. Denne oppgaven utydper temane om androgyny og homosekualitet i romaene og hvordan det kobles med kristene verdier. Androgyny er en naturlig, men ofte undertrykt del av mennesket og er kilden for frykt for individenes indre "freak." Oppgaven går videre med å koble denne frykten til temaet religion i tillegg til å utgreie om paradoksene som finnes i representasjonen av uskyldighet og renhet i henhold til homoseksuelle aktiviteter.

In the novel Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, the reader is introduced to a narrator who struggles with his sexual identity. This thesis elaborates on the themes of androgyny and homosexuality in in the novel and how it connects with Christian values. Androgyny is a natural, but often suppressed, part of any human being, and is the source of fear for the individuals inner “freak.” The thesis goes on to connect this fear to the theme of religion, as well as clarify the paradoxes in the representation of innocence and purity in relation to homosexual activity.
