Øko-misantropi som (av-)dannelsesprosjekt

Abstract

Oppgaven presenterer en økokritisk lesning av Gert Nygårdshaugs roman Mengele Zoo, med fokus på hvordan hovedkarakteren, Mino, uttrykker et øko-misantropisk moralsyn. Dette illustreres blant annet gjennom en sammenstilling av antroposentriske og økosentriske interesser, for å vise hvordan kapitalistisk vinning går på bekostning av naturens interesser. Ved å undersøke ulike fremstillinger av natur, litterære virkemidler som antropomorfisme og teriomorfisme, samt se på hvordan romanen stiller seg til sin hovedperson, argumenterer jeg for at det endelige budskapet i romanen ikke er øko-misantropisk, men har et mål om en økosentrisk «av-dannelsesreise» som evner å skape debatt hos sine lesere. Analysen bygger på Lawrence Buells kriterier for en miljøorientert tekst og Garrards definisjoner av økokritiske troper, i tillegg til dypøkologisk teori jamfør Arne Næss.

This masters’ thesis presents an ecocritical analysis of Gert Nygårdshaug’s novel Mengele Zoo, focusing in particular on how Mino, the main character, expresses an eco-misanthropic moral view. This view is shown in the novels collocation of anthropocentric and ecocentric values, thereby illustrating how a capitalistic view thrives on the expense of nature. By examining the novel’s portrayal of nature, using literary devices such as anthropomorphism and theriomorphism, and also by analyzing how the novel approaches its own protagonist, my argument claims that the novels intention is not of an eco-misanthropic nature. It is rather on a mission to educate its reader in an eco-centric manner, by sparking debate and provoking their point of view. Lawrence Buell’s four criteria for what constitutes an ecologically oriented discourse makes up the basis for the analysis, along with Greg Garrard’s use of ecocritical tropes, and deep-ecology theory as presented by Arne Næss.
