Abstract: Like many other municipalities, Stjørdal, has a high rate of absence due to sicness in the health care services. Two caring institutions that came into business at about the same time, shows one with low level of sicness absence, and the other one with significantly higher level of sickness absence among the employees. Research showed that inner motivation affects the sickness absence, and that the leader has a great impact on the inner motivation of the employees. With this topic as a background, I have done a case study where I have compared these two institutions to find out whether the leadership role is important for the inner motivation of the employees. I have named my study: How can the leader promoting the employees inner motivation? I have used theories focus on motivation and the relationship between the leader and employee. In addition I have used document studies and other relevant research. My own empirical work was done by conducting qualitative interviews with the leaders and three employees at each of the two institutions. The main finding in this study was that the institution with employees with high degree of motivation has a significantly lower sickness absence than the institution with employees of low internal motivation. Own empirical support with theories and other research shows eight ways a leader can increase the employee's inner motivation: 1) Leader must make sure that the employees experience autonomy in the workplace. 2) Leader must make sure that employees facing challenges in their daily work. 3) Leader should ensure that the workers have the necessary skills to solve their work tasks. 4) Leader is important in creating a good organizational culture. 5) The leader should be present in person in the department to give support to the employees and answer questions from the employees. 6) Leader should give the employees structured feedback 7) Visible goals should be discussed between the employees and leader, and made visible in the department, short term and specific. 8)Posistive feedback and rewards from the leader to the employees is very important.nb_NO
