In this master thesis, focus group interview has been used to get deeper insight into the students understanding of basic chemistry in science. The participants of this study are six science students at upper secondary school. There are particularly three concepts of interest in this study: atoms, molecules and the octet rule. Students meet these concepts throughout most of their education. The aforementioned concepts are often used in relation with atomic models and the periodic table.
