Det nasjonale forskningsprosjektet Developing national standards for the assessment of writing.
Summary of the thesis This thesis is based on a qualitative study of how pupils in the same class (grade 6) write reflective and explorative texts in the subjects Norwegian (L1) and mathematics. The case study is part of the bigger project Developing national standards for the assessment of writing. A tool for teaching and learning. (the NORM-project), a long-term Norwegian intervention study (2012-2015) with 20 participating schools (grades 3-7). The thesis is a critical discussion of the concepts reflection and exploration within the construct the Wheel of Writing, where to reflect and to explore are two out of six acts of writing. In the Norm-project, the Wheel of Writing is an important theoretical construct, and the teachers at the 20 participating schools had to use the Wheel of Writing as a point of departure when they designed writing tasks and writing events in different subjects. In addition to being a qualitative study of pupils’ reflective and explorative writing in two different subjects, the thesis is a study that can shed light on some aspects of “what’s going on” in a large intervention study where concepts and ways of thinking are to be integrated in different schools’ learning ecologies. The data is analyzed with Bakhtin’s metalinguistics as a point of departure, which constitutes the overarching theoretical perspective. In this perspective, the pupils’ writing is seen as part of a bigger ecology. How the pupils position themselves as writers and the texts’ grounding are central in the study’s analytical approach, and the analysis shows that writing in the two subjects involve different textual positionings with respect to epistemic modality and aspect. The thesis contributes to a discussion of some of the challenges and opportunities of using the Wheel of Writing’s acts of writing as a starting point for writing and for designing writing tasks. The results of the study shed light on the importance of discussing subject-relevant ways of reflecting/exploring, different writing tasks’ reflective and explorative dimensions and terms, and how teaching and writing in different subjects involve certain conditions for how reflection and exploration may be understood in different circumstances. The thesis does not offer final answers to these challenges, but may shed light on how difficult and challenging the concept of reflection and exploration can be in a context where the Wheel of writing is used to create writing events.nb_NO
