In this thesis Danish, Norwegian and Spanish curricula and textbooks in social studies in secondary schools, are analyzed in a qualitative study to see how they treat the concept EU. This is done through a text and discourse analysis of curricula and textbooks from these three countries. The curricula is centrally set of policy given documents. The textbooks are quite new and updated and represent modern teaching methods with a variety of tasks and the use of digital skills. The textbooks I have selected are: From Denmark: "Samfundsag 9", from Spain, "Geografía e Historia, 3. ESO" and from Norway: "Underveis 10" and "Matriks 10".
The reason for this task is a personal sense of wonder why the concept of the EU is not mentioned in the Norwegian curriculum in social studies in secondary schools at all. I selected two other European countries, Denmark and Spain, both of which are members of the EU, to see how the topic is discussed in these curricula. My pre-understanding implied that neither the two Norwegian textbooks took up the topic EU in particular because of a lack of competence in the curriculum. This proved not to be right, since both the two Norwegian textbooks have a good, copious and often neutral treatment of EU organization in their textbooks. Through theory and method I formed a theoretical basis for analyzing these curricula and textbooks in terms of how they treated the concept of the EU. I availed myself of a critical text analysis with an eye on the exercise of power in texts, semiotic modalities, context and image analysis. As a method I used qualitative content analysis of textbooks as the empirical material. I also used quantitative frequency analysis as well. In curriculum analysis the study showed that the concept of EU is treated in more or less the same way in the curricula of Denmark and Spain; while the concept was completely lacking in the Norwegian curriculum. In textbook analysis it showed that the term EU is carefully and thoroughly presented in textbooks from Denmark and Spain, while in the two Norwegian books the concept is hardly mentioned. Nevertheless, the concept of EU is treated in a fair and neutral way in both of the two Norwegian textbooks. My conclusion after the discussion is that the concept of EU is processed in a thorough and objective way in both curriculas and textbooks from Denmark and Spain, while the concept is lacking in the Norwegian curriculum. Yet EU is described in a fair and factual manner in the Norwegian textbooks as well.
