i virkelige scenarioer.
Videre arbeid bør inkludere mer komplekse undersjøiske miljøforhold for å gjøre
nøyaktigheten for strukturelle feil i marin ingeniørvitenskap.
dc.description.abstract | This Master’s thesis at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology ex-
plores the dynamic response of marine structures to high-energy impacts using
Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Specifically, it examines the effect of a dropped
container impacting a protective steel cover, with simulations conducted using An-
sys software. This research focuses on modeling the energy distribution between
the container and steel cover exclusively with the explicit dynamics solver and
compares the performance of explicit and implicit solvers in simpler scenarios in-
volving a plate model and a basic model of the Dropped Object Protection (DOP)
cover.
Significant findings from the explicit dynamics simulations indicate that the de-
formable container absorbs approximately 40.3% of the plastic work, significantly
mitigating the impact force transmitted to the steel cover. This absorption sub-
stantially enhances the structural integrity and protective efficacy of the cover.
Additionally, the explicit solver’s capability to capture the rupture of the plate is
particularly notable. Unlike the implicit solver, which does not account for ele-
ment erosion, the explicit solver effectively models the initiation and propagation
of cracks under extreme stress conditions. This ability is crucial for accurately pre-
dicting failure modes in real-world scenarios and provides a deeper understanding
of the material behavior under high-impact loads.
Comparative evaluations were conducted on a simplified model of the Dropped
Object Protection (DOP) cover using both solvers. The results from the explicit
solver showed a close alignment with the analytical calculations, which incorpo-
rated both plastic hinge theory and membrane effects, demonstrating a deviation
of only 8.8%. In contrast, the implicit solver exhibited a deviation of 63.6%. How-
ever, it is important to note that the mesh size was larger for the implicit solver,
due to its significantly higher CPU time requirements. It was also interesting to
see the importance of including membrane effects when applying the plastic hinge
mechanism. Omitting these effects led to a conservative estimation, significantly
overestimating the deformation.
In terms of computational efficiency, the explicit solver significantly outperformed
the implicit solver, completing tasks in far less time. Specifically, the explicit solver
required dramatically less computational time—about 10.95 times faster than the
implicit solver for the same analysis of the plate model. This was mostly due to
the significant amount of data being read and written to the disk, so-called I/O
operations.
Given these insights, the thesis advocates for the use of explicit FEA methods for
analyzing high-energy impact scenarios. Additionally, the thesis undertook several
parametric studies using explicit dynamics, focusing on aspects such as friction
sensitivity, boundary conditions, erosion control and impact energy.
Future research should include more complex environmental conditions for subsea,
to enhance model realism and applicability. Additionally, refining material models
to better represent rate-dependent plasticity and damage mechanisms could signif-
icantly improve the predictive accuracy of structural failures in marine engineering.
Comparing runtime on different storage media for the implicit solver would help
identify potential optimizations, crucial for assessing how hardware configurations
affect computational efficiency. Conducting physical drop tests would validate
FEA models against real-world data, offering practical assessments of theoretical
predictions and ensuring simulation configurations accurately reflect true material
behaviors and impact dynamics. Furthermore, including considerations of local
buckling in columns within simulation models would provide a more comprehen-
sive analysis of structural integrity, especially under high-stress impacts where
local failures can propagate and lead to significant structural compromises.
