Abstract

Ved å dykke inn i mirakelsamlingen tilskrevet Olav den hellige, Miracula beati Olavi, utforsker denne masteroppgaven hvordan mirakler reflekterer middelalder- Norges hverdagsliv og lekfolkets mentalitet innenfor Olavskulten. Oppgaven belyser hvordan miraklene ikke bare tjente som bevis på helgenens tilstedeværelse, men også speilet samtidens tro, rettssystemer, arbeidsliv og ytterligere samfunnsstrukturer. Den fokuserer spesielt på mirakler som fant sted under Olavs festdager, og i nærhet til Olavsskrinet i Nidaros. Videre undersøker oppgaven hvordan miraklene bidro til å intensivere lekfolkets opplevelse av det hellige gjennom ulike ritualer. Ved å anvende en metodisk historisk tilnærming, med særlig vekt på teksttolkning og hermeneutikk, søker oppgaven å avdekke den kulturelle konteksten miraklene oppstod i, og deres rolle i å forme middelalderens tro og praksis. Samlet sett indikerer Miracula Olavi at lekfolk kunne bevitne og oppleve helgenens mirakuløse kraft på nært hold, til tross for sin passive rolle innenfor den liturgiske konteksten.

By exploring the miracle collection attributed to Saint Olaf, Miracula beati Olavi, this master's thesis explores how miracles reveal aspects of everyday life and the mindset of laypeople in medieval Norway within the context of the cult of St. Olaf. The thesis highlights how the miracles acted both as confirmation of the saint’s presence and as a mirror also mirror to the beliefs, legal frameworks, working conditions, and other general societal structures of that time. It particularly focuses on miracles that occurred during Saint Olaf's feast days and in proximity to the Shrine of Olaf in Nidaros. Moreover, the thesis investigates how the miracles intensified the laypeople's experience of the sacred through engaging in various rituals. By employing a methodical historical approach, with a particular emphasis on text interpretation and hermeneutics, this thesis aims to reveal the cultural context in which the miracles occurred and their role in shaping medieval faith and religious practice. Overall, Miracula Olavi illustrates that religious activity did not have to be part of the formal liturgy for laypeople to experience the saint's miraculous power.
