dc.description.abstract | This thesis wants to show comparisons between music and psychoanalysis. How does music inform psychoanalysis, and how does psychoanalysis inform music/musicology? I want to examine this by looking mostly at the relationship between time, the experience of time and subjectivity in the listening experience. The thesis discusses literature on the use of music in psychoanalytic therapy through clinical experience and theory. It also draws upon minimalistic music with psychoanalytical perspectives, where my own analysis of Philip Glass`s Metamorphosis is compared to other theories about minimalism. The clinical examples show two different approaches in using music as a tool in psychoanalytic therapy. The results from the compositional analysis and the theory with clinical examples in combination with neuroscientific and cognitive research, wants to shed light on the issue. The thesis also elaborates a hypothesis and ask for more research about the main target in the thesis- the dynamic self and the subject’s formation in time and through time (temporal continuity), through music and psychoanalysis. | |
