"Bølgernes Knuus": En undersøkelse av forestillinger om havet i den norske kystkulturen 1750-1900

Denne masteroppgaven er en kulturhistorisk undersøkelse av den norske kystbefolkningens forestillinger om havet i perioden 1750-1900. Med håp om at forsynet og lykken var på deres side, satte folk ut på havet for å få tak i dets ressurser. Havet representerte både håp og katastrofe; det havet som gav livsgrunnlaget, tok også liv av og til. Denne dualismen i relasjonen mellom mennesket og havet, og hvordan den speiles i en historisk kultur, er utgangspunktet for framstillingen. Empirien baseres på en analyse av skillingsviser som uttrykk for en folkelig tanke- og livsverden tilknyttet kystkulturen. I undersøkelsen stilles fire spørsmål; 1) hvordan skillingsviser som tematiserer havet og kystkulturen framstiller medgang og motgang i menneskelivet, 2) hvordan havet omtales i skillingsvisene, og hva det kan fortelle om relasjonen mellom kystbefolkningen og havet, 3) hvordan forklares ulykker på havet i skillingsvisene, og 4) undersøkelsen spør også om skillingsvisene viser en utvikling i kystkulturens måter å se verden på i perioden 1750-1900. To overgripende konklusjoner i undersøkelsen er at det skjer endringer i kystallmuens tankeverden i perioden 1750-1900, men at disse endringene går langsomt. Den viktigste endringen er at havet som grusom natur ser ut til å falle utenfor Guds sfære i løpet av perioden, og at dette fikk konsekvenser både for folkelige oppfatninger av medgang og motgang, for kystallmuens syn på havet, og hvordan ulykker ble forklart i kystkulturen. Skillingsvisene avdekker at kystallmuen opplevde seg som utsatt overfor havet gjennom det meste av den undersøkte perioden, og den langsomme endringstakten i kystkulturens forestillingsverden må sees i lys av opplevelsen av sårbarhet overfor en mektig natur.

Abstract

This thesis is a cultural historical examination of the Norwegian coastal population and their perception of the ocean in the period of 1750-1900. Hoping that divine Providence and good fortune would be on their side, they set out for the ocean’s resources. The ocean represented both hope and catastrophe; the fisher peasants lived by the ocean, but they occasionally died from it as well. This dualism in man’s relationship with the ocean, and how it is mirrored in a historical culture, is the starting point for this examination. The empirical parts of the thesis are based on an analysis of skilling ballads which are supposed to express a popular world of thought and life world, connected to coastal culture. The examination identifies four research questions: 1) how is prosperity and adversity outlined in skilling ballads connected to coastal culture? 2) how is the ocean referred to in the skilling ballads, and what can it tell us about the relation between the coastal population and the ocean? 3) how are accidents at the ocean explained in the skilling ballads, and 4) can we, by examining skilling ballads, trace a development towards modernity in a coastal popular world view in the period of 1750-1900? Two overarching conclusions can be made; first, that the popular world of thought changes towards modernity throughout the period, but it is a very slow development. Second, the most important cosmological change, is that the ocean as a cruel nature is excluded from God’s sphere of action, and this has consequences for popular beliefs concerning both prosperity and adversity, how the ocean was pictured, and how accidents were explained in coastal culture. The skilling ballads reveals that the Norwegian coastal population felt exposed to the ocean during most of the period of 1750-1900, and the slow changes in mentality must be viewed in the light of the felt vulnerability to a powerful nature.
