Fra Miles Davis til Casiopea: En studie om jazz-fusion sin utvikling og variasjoner mellom USA og Japan

Abstract

Jazz-fusion sjangeren er en sjanger som, i forhold til andre sjangre og stilarter innen jazz, sjelden får like mye oppmerksomhet til tross for sin store innflytelse på populærmusikken som kom etter. Enda mindre er fokuset på jazzen og jazz-fusion-sjangeren som foregikk i Japan. Hensikten med denne oppgaven er å gjennom litteraturstudie og egen analyse av kjente musikkverk å utforske utviklingen av jazz-fusion sjangeren i både Amerika og Japan i løpet av slutten av 60-tallet frem til sent 80-tallet, og se på likheter og ulikheter mellom disse. Videre er målet også å se på hva som definerer “sounden” av begge versjonene av sjangeren og sette ord på hva som gjør Japansk fusion distinkt i forhold til den amerikanske versjonen av samme sjanger. Oppgaven vil definere hva fusion som sjanger er, samt forklare utviklingen av fusion i både Japan og USA, gjennom litteratur, kjente album og låter fra artister som Miles Davis og Casiopea som er med å definere sjangeren. Den vil også gjennom refleksjon basert på informasjonen som ble funnet, argumentere hvordan den japanske fusion stilen er distinkt i sin bruk av melodi baserte komposisjoner, fylt av “upbeat” og funky rytmer, hvor synther og gitarer fyller lydbilde overfor den rock og funk inspirerte, “groove” baserte fusion musikken som oppsto i Amerika.

The jazz-fusion genre is a genre that, compared to other genres and styles within jazz, rarely receives as much attention despite its great influence on popular music that came after. Even less is the focus on jazz and the jazz-fusion genre that took place in Japan. The purpose of this thesis is to, through literature study and my own analysis of well-known works of music, explore the development of the jazz-fusion genre in both America and Japan during the late 60s until the late 80s, and look at similarities and differences between these. Furthermore, the goal is also to look at what defines the "sound" of both versions of the genre and put into words what makes Japanese fusion distinct in relation to the American version of the same genre. The assignment will define what fusion is as a genre, as well as explain the development of fusion in both Japan and the USA, through literature, well-known albums and songs from artists like Miles Davis and Casiopea that helped define the genre. It will also through reflection based on the information that was found, argue how the Japanese fusion style is distinct in its use of melody based compositions, filled with "upbeat" and funky rhythms, where synths and guitars fill the soundscape against the rock and funk inspired, "groove" based fusion music that originated in America.
