Lyden av lidelse, motstand og håpet om frihet: En analyse av soulmusikkens betydning i borgerettighetskampen, 1955-1968

Abstract

Denne fordypningsoppgaven undersøker soulmusikkens relasjon til borgerrettighetsbevegelsen på 1950- og 60-tallet. Gjennom et bibliografisk søk av tilgjengelig og relevant litteratur, har oppgaven som mål å avdekke betydningen av soulartistenes musikalske aktivisme i transformative tidsperioden. De innledende kapitlene tar for seg fremveksten av soulsjangeren, samt sentrale hendelser i borgerrettighetsbevegelsen, og legger grunnlaget for videre låtanalyser. Hoveddelen tar for seg en analyse av låtene Mississippi Goddamn av Nina Simone og A Change is Gonna Come av Sam Cooke. Ved å anvende den hermeneutiske metoden, med vekt på kontekstualisering, dykker oppgaven ned i låtenes sosiale- og historiske kontekst. Dette gjøres for å avdekke låtenes egentlige budskap. Sangene vitner om to artister som nekter å være passive tilskuere i møte med urettferdighet. Analysen avdekker de politiske budskapene som er innvend i sangene, hvilket knytter Simone til Black Power bevegelsen, mens Cooke´s låt i større grad resonnerer med de tradisjonelle idealene til borgerrettighetsbevegelsen. Oppgavens avslutning bygger på analysens funn, og fastslår at soul-fenomenet og borgerettighetskampen var tett sammenvevd. Videre konkluderer oppgaven med at innflytelsesrike musikere som Nina Simone og Sam Cooke spilte en betydelig rolle i både soul- og borgerrettighetsbevegelsen.

This bachelor thesis examines the relationship between soul music and the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. Through a bibliographic search of available and pertinant literature, the paper aims to elucidate the significance of soul artists’ musical activism during this transformative era. The initial chapters account for the emergence of soul music, as well as key events in the civil rights movement, setting the stage for the analysis of the selected songs. The primary focus of the thesis revolves around an analysis of Nina Simone´s Mississippi Goddamn and Sam Cooke`s A Change is Gonna Come. Employing the hermeneutic method, with an emphasis on contextualization, this study delves into the social and historical context of the songs to uncover their true message. Through this lens, the songs unveil the resolute stance of artists who refuse to remain passive bystanders in the face of injustice. The analysis reveals the political messages embedded in the songs. This connects Simone to the Black Power movement, while Cooke´s composition resonates more with the traditional ideals of the civil rights movement. The conclusion of the thesis relies on the findings of the analysis, stating that the soul phenomenon and the civil rights movement were closely intertwined. Furthermore, the conclusion asserts that influential musicians like Nina Simone and Sam Cooke played a significant role in both the civil rights- and the soul- movement.
