Et hav av stemmer: Sang som virkemiddel i Trøndelag Teaters Havfruen

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven med tittelen «Et hav av stemmer: Sang som virkemiddel i Trøndelag Teaters Havfruen» utforsker hvilke funksjoner sang kan ha som et dramaturgisk virkemiddel i en teaterscenisk/teatral kontekst. Målet med oppgaven er å løfte fram sangens potensial til mer enn bare et ytre estetisk virkemiddel, samt å gi et forslag til noen spesifikke funksjoner sang kan ha i en teaterforestilling. Dette gjør oppgaven ved å svare på problemstillingen: Hvilken dramaturgisk funksjon har sang i Trøndelag Teaters forestilling Havfruen? Oppgaven anvender en todelt metode med litteraturstudie og forestillingsanalyse. Førstnevnte samler og diskuterer eksisterende, relevant teori for å belyse forestillingsanalysen, som igjen benytter en delvis semiotisk og delvis fenomenologisk tilnærming. Musikkteaterforestillingen Havfruen (Trøndelag Teater, 2022), med manus og regi av Tyra Tønnesen og musikk av Gjermund Larsen, er forskningsobjektet. Analysen redegjør for erfaringsbaserte og meningsbærende momenter ved sangen i oppsetningen, og trekker samtidig litteraturstudiens funn opp mot disse. Oppgaven konkluderer med at Havfruen opererer med et mangfold av sanglige funksjoner, og identifiserer tre nøkkelfunksjoner: sang som følelser, sang som magi og sang som identitet.

This bachelor’s thesis, with the title “An Ocean of Voices: Song as tool in Trøndelag Teater’s Havfruen” explores the possible functions of song as a dramaturgical tool in a theatrical context. The goal of this thesis is to promote the potential of song as something beyond a superficial aesthetic tool, and to suggest specific functions for song in a theatre performance. The thesis does this through the research question: What is the dramaturgical function of song in the performance Havfruen, by Trøndelag Teater? The applied method is twofold, with both a literature study and a performance study. The former gathers and discusses existing, relevant theories in order to illuminate the performance study, which is based on a partly semiotic, partly phenomenological approach. The musical Havfruen (Trøndelag Teater, 2022), written and directed by Tyra Tønnesen with music by Gjermund Larsen, is the object of research. The performance study examines song in the performance both as a carrier of experience and meaning, drawn up against the findings from the literature study. In conclusion, this thesis finds a diversity of functions for song in the performance Havfruen, and identifies in particular three key functions: song as feelings, song as magic and song as identity.
