This thesis explores the development of an optimization model for the efficient allocation of empty wagons at CargoNet, addressed through a tactical planning model. The problem focuses on reducing the number of surplus wagons in the company's fleet, which incurs increased operational costs. By using a mathematical model and analyses of historical data, the thesis approaches the goal of enhancing CargoNet's operational efficiency without compromising service quality. The main results indicate that by implementing the proposed model, CargoNet can achieve significant reductions in the number of unnecessary wagons, thereby reducing costs while maintaining a high level of service. The contributions of this research include a detailed methodology for optimizing wagon usage in the railway sector, demonstrating how theoretical models can be adapted to practical problems in the railway industry.
