Estimating the Nordic Phillips Curve: A comparative analysis of changes in four Nordic Phillips curves post the 2008 Financial Crisis

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker fire nordiske Phillips kurver for forandringer med hensyn til finanskrisen i 2008, og ved bruk av kvartalsdata fra 1989 til 2023. Landene som undersøkes er Danmark, Finland, Norge og Sverige. Vi utfører undersøkelsen ved å ta i bruk fire forskjellige multippel linear regresjons-modeller for å kunne fastsette effekten av finanskrisen på hvert land.

Våre resultater er tvetydige. Selv om vi finner statistisk signifikant bevis på en flatere Phillips kurve for Norge og Danmark, finner vi også statistikk signifikant bevis på the motsatte for Finland. Vi finner ikke statistisk signifikant bevis på at finanskrisen i 2008 påvirket den nordiske Phillips kurven. Vi anbefaler at mer forskning utføres på dette feltet.

This thesis examines four Nordic Phillips curves for changes with regards to the 2008 Financial Crisis using quarterly data from 1989 to 2023. The countries examined are Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. In order to examine this, we intend to utilize four different multiple linear regression models in order to determine the effect of the Financial Crisis on each country.

Our results are inconclusive. Although we find statistically significant evidence of a flattening Phillips curve for Norway and Denmark, we also find statistically significant evidence to the contrary for Finland. We find no statistically significant evidence that the 2008 Financial Crisis influenced the four Nordic Phillips curves. Further research is recommended.
