The Eurosceptic discourse of the British Conservative party: An analysis of Conservative campaign material during the last four general elections, 2010-19

Abstract

Denne oppgaven ser på parlamentsvalgene i Storbritannia fra årene 2010-2019 og studerer gjennom bruk av kvalitativ tekstanalyse retorikken brukt i valgmaterialet til det Konservative Partiet (Conservative Party) og dets bruk av euroskeptisisme. Målet med oppgaven var å vise en tydelig eskalasjon i euroskeptisisme innen valgkampsmaterialet, hvor det er en økning for hvert valg gjennom tiåret hvor det blir mer og mer aggressivt. Dette er gjennomført ved bruk av partiprogram, intervjuer, Facebook-innlegg og andre former for arkivert dokumentasjon. For å forklare euroskeptisisme er det brukt studier og akademiske tekster fra anerkjente forfattere innen det relevante feltet for å tilby en detaljert forklaring. Resultatet avkreftet antagelsen, selv om euroskeptisisme var til stede fra starten er det overraskende lite bevis på en samordnet euroskeptisk innsats i hvert valg. Valgene var mye mer fokusert på rivaliserende partier og andre saker med et sjeldent bruk av anti-EU synspunkter, mye mindre enn opprinnelig antatt.

Looking into the four United Kingdom elections from 2010-2019 this thesis studies with the use of a qualitative textual analysis the rhetoric of the campaign material of the Conservative Party and its use of Euroscepticism. The aim of this thesis was to show a clear escalation of Eurosceptic rhetoric among the Conservative campaign material, with each election getting more and more aggressive throughout the decade. This is achieved using available information such as manifestos, interview, Facebook-posts and other archived documentation. To explain Euroscepticism, studies and scholarly texts from prominent authors in the field were used to provide detailed explanations. The results proved this assumption wrong, while euroscepticism was present from the start, there is surprisingly little evidence of a concerted Eurosceptic effort in each election. Each election was much more concerned with the opposing parties and other causes, seldom using anti-EU sentiments as much as originally believed.
