Revising National Identity The AfD's Nationalist Rhetoric and Historical Narratives in Germany

Abstract

De siste tiårene har det blomstret opp noe sterkere nasjonalistisk sentiment i Europa, noe som har skjedd i samråd med veksten av radikale høyrepartier. Med fremveksten av det politiske partiet ‘Alternative für Deutschland’ (AfD) i 2013 er ikke Tyskland lenger et unntak av denne nasjonalistiske bølgen. Denne artikkelen undersøker hvordan AfD bruker nasjonalistisk retorikk for å rekonstruere den tyske nasjonale identiteten og undersøker hvordan partiet forsøker å fremme nasjonalistisk sentiment gjennom et annet perspektiv på tysk historie. Gjennom en ‘Single Case Study’ av AfDs retorikk og historisk framstilling, blir det vist at partiet bruker et fremmedfiendtlig og ekskluderende budskap for å redefinere trekk av nasjonal identitet, ved å posisjonere 'oss' som etniske tyske borgere og 'dem' som trusler mot tysk identitet. Videre fremmer AfDs historiske fortelling stolthet over tysk identitet, og utfordrer de dominerende framstillingene som tilknytter skam til den Tysklands nazistiske fortid. Denne studien belyser AfDs innvirkning på den nasjonale identitets debatten og kommenterer behovet for mer forskning for å vurdere nasjonalistisk sentiment og AfD’s innvirkning på de andre politiske partiene i Tyskland.

In the last decades, Europe has witnessed a resurgence of nationalistic sentiments, coinciding with the rise of radical right parties. With the emergence of the political party ‘Alternative für Deutschland’ (AfD) in 2013, Germany is no longer an exception to this nationalistic wave. This paper examines how the AfD employs nationalist rhetoric to reshape the German national identity and examines how the party attempt to foster nationalistic sentiment by a different framing of the German past. Through a single-case study analysis of the AfD's rhetoric and historical narrative, it becomes evident that the party employ a xenophobic and excluding messages to redefine the characteristic of national identity, positioning 'us' as ethnic German citizens and 'them' as threats to the German identity. Furthermore, the AfD's historical narrative promotes pride in German identity, and are challenging prevailing narratives of shame associated with Germany's Nazi past. This study highlights the AfD's impact on the national identity discourse and comments on the need for further research to assess nationalistic sentiment and the AfD's broader impact on the other political parties in Germany.
