In my thesis I look at Flavius Josephus apologetic work called Against Apion, with a focus on the part of his work where he quotes famous Greek authors. I first give an introduction and orientation on Josephus and his works before I then comment on section 161-182. An English translation of section 161-182 follows the commentary.
The theme in this thesis is the relationship between the Greeks and the Jews in antiquity seen through the eyes of the Jewish historian Josephus. Josephus gives us many interesting interpretations of famous authors like Herodotus and Theophrastus, and lesser-known authors like Clearchus. Hermippus of Smyrna's biography which Josephus quotes invites us into the conversation in antiquity amongst the Jews which was also picked up by the early church fathers, about the supposed influence of Moses on the famous Greek philosophers such as Socrates and Plato. Josephus quotation from the Greek poet Cherilus leads us into a discussion about the Solymean mountains as mentioned by Homer and the Indian Ethiopians as described by Herodotus.
