Oppgaven utforsker den historiske og kulturelle konteksten til Plautus' komedie Aulularia ved å analysere hvordan sosiale og kulturelle forskjeller i det antikke Roma manifesterer seg i stykket. Den innledes med en gjennomgang av Plautus' liv, samt de historiske omstendighetene og personene som forskere mener kan ha påvirket stykket. Videre undersøker oppgaven teatertradisjonene som var dominerende under Plautus' levetid, og hvordan disse påvirker fortolkningen av stykket. Kommentaren dykker dypere inn i stykkets behandling av temaer som slaveri, guder, ekteskap, og statusen til barn født utenfor ekteskap.
