The Chronicle of Peter of Alexandria

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven består av en oversettelse av de første seks av tjueseks kapitlene i krøniken til Peter av Alexandria med en kort kommentar om filologiske og andre relevante problemstillinger i form av fotnoter. Krøniken til Peter av Alexandria er en krønike som skisserer tidene fra da Adam og Eva fødte Seth i år 230 (av den bibliske æra) til regjeringstiden til den bysantinske keiseren Leo VI. Teksten er fra tidlig på 900-tallet, kanskje fra bare noen få år etter slutten av historien, som avsluttes med denne keiserens regjeringstid. Krøniken består for det meste av en historisk beretning av Bibelen: over halvparten av krøniken omhandler den historisk tradisjonen til først mosebok, etterfulgt av kapitler som inneholder materiale fra omtrent halvparten av bøkene i det gamle testamentet. Krøniken er lite undersøkt; det er ingen tidligere oversettelse eller kommentar til teksten publisert til dags dato. Den eneste kritiske utgaven av denne teksten er fra 1959 og har en introduksjon på noen få sider på russisk.

This bachelor's thesis consists of a translation of the first six of twenty-six chapters in the Chronicle of Peter of Alexandria with a brief commentary on philological and other relevant issues in the form of footnotes. The Chronicle of Peter of Alexandria is a chronicle outlining the times from when Adam and Eve begot Seth in the year 230 (of the Biblical era) until the reign of the Byzantine emperor Leo VI. The text is from the early 10th century, perhaps from only a few years after the end of its narrative, which concludes with the reign of this emperor. The chronicle consists mostly of a historical account from the Bible: over half of the chronicle deals with the historical tradition of the Book of Genesis, followed by chapters containing material from about half the books of the Old Testament. The chronicle is under-researched; there is no previous translation or commentary of the text published to date. The only critical edition of the text is from 1959 and has an introduction of a few pages in Russian.
