Hest og hesteutstyr i graver fra yngre jernalder En oversikt over tolkninger og hvorvidt de kan være påvirket av datidens arkeologiske rammeverk

Abstract

Det virker svært sannsynlig at forskningen og tolkningene gjort om hest og hesteutstyr i gravene har blitt påvirket av den tidens rammeverk når det kommer til tolkning. Dette kan observeres som vist til tidligere i oppgaven, med en tydelig økning av tolkningen av hest og hesteutstyr som symbol, enn det som var gjort tidligere. Det er likevel nyttig å huske følgende:

- Om en tekst tilhører en spesifikk periode trenger den ikke reflektere dette. Dette gjelder også i nyere tid, en tekst kan falle under «eldre rammeverk» som prosessuell arkeologi, men være skrevet på 2000-tallet. Eldre rammeverk forsvinner ikke når en ny kommer inn.

- Det andre som er verdt å huske er at ikke alle graver trenger å ha like intensjoner og vise det samme, noe som kan føre til ulike tolkninger. Ikke alle graver er like og hest og hesteutstyr opptrer i ulike type graver.

“It would therefore be ill-advised to work with the assumption that burial practices in Scandinavia during the Viking Age would have been carried out with identical intentions. This would presuppose that a kind of common mentality existed across the region, something that is nearly impossible to prove and accordingly foolhardy to argue.” (Shenk, 2002, s.6).

En del av arkeologene som er blitt sett på i denne oppgaven nevner at hesten i graven trolig har hatt flere ulike roller, eller de kommer med og presenterer, flere mulige tolkninger til funnene de jobber med i tekstene sine. Arkeologene legger vekt på forskjellige aspekter av hest og hesteutstyr i graven. Mulige tolkninger som er presentert er at hesten var i graven for å reflektere det levde livet, kameratskapet med hesten, at hesten reflekterte makt og status, det militære, det religiøse, det rituelle eller om den var et symbol. Som nevnt innledningsvis er det vist til at hesten hadde ulike roller og dermed betydninger.

It seems very likely that the research and interpretations made about horses and horse equipment in the graves have been influenced by the framework of the time when it comes to interpretation. This can be observed as shown earlier in the thesis, with a clear increase in the interpretation of horses and horse equipment as symbols, compared to what was done previously. It is nevertheless useful to remember the following:

- If a text belongs to a specific period, it does not have to reflect this. This also applies in recent times, a text can be categorized as "older frameworks" such as processual archaeology, but be written in the 2000s. Older frameworks do not disappear when a new one comes in.

- The other thing worth remembering is that not all graves need to have the same intentions and show the same, which can lead to different interpretations. Not all graves are the same and horses and horse equipment appear in different types of graves.

Some archaeologists who have been evaluated in this thesis mention that the horse in the grave probably had several different roles, or they come up with and present several possible interpretations for the findings they are working with in their texts. The archaeologists emphasize different aspects of horses and horse equipment in the grave. Possible interpretations which have been presented are that the horse was in the grave to reflect the life lived, the friendship with the horse, that the horse reflected power and status, the military, the religious, the ritual or whether it was a symbol. As mentioned at the beginning, it is shown that the horse had different roles and thus meanings.
