The social differences amongst the residents in Norway are increasing, parallel with a growing proportion of adolescents who struggle with mental health issues. This thesis aims to discuss how low socioeconomic status affects the mental health of Norwegian adolescents, with the help of the Ecological systems theory. Other relevant terms included is socioeconomic status, mental health issues and social capital. The thesis is based on already existing knowledge, and the data are collected through a systematic literature search. Partly based on the study “Pilot 0-24 – the citizens model”, who took place in Trondheim in the timeframe 2021-2023, the thesis discusses the impact of socioeconomic status in a local context, as well as in a wider point of view. The discussion is based on how low socioeconomic status is understood and measured in a Norwegian context, as well as how the different systems in the ecological system theory can function both as a risk- or a protective factor for the person’s mental health. Furthermore, the economy ́s impact on the individual ́s socioeconomic status is discussed. The thesis concludes that the impact of low socioeconomic status on the mental health varies as a result of the combined risk and protective factors surrounding the person. Social inclusion inside the meso system is highlighted as a significant protective factor for the mental health, also when other risk factors are present.
