Akustisk musikkproduksjon til Dolby Atmos

Abstract

Hvordan går man frem for å produsere akustisk musikk til Dolby Atmos og hva kan dette nye lydformatet tilføre den tradisjonelle musikkopplevelsen? Dette prosjektet utforsker de soniske mulighetene Dolby Atmos tilbyr for produksjon av akustisk musikk gjennom praktisk utforskning og kreativ eksperimentering av ulike produksjonsteknikker. En kort oversikt over historien til surround-lyd blir presentert. Videre tar jeg for meg ulike format og mikrofonteknikk for 3D-lyd. Hoveddelen av prosjektet består av tre produksjoner: «Maid Veahket» - innspilling i Nidarosdomen, en praktisk utforskning av tre kompakte 3D-mikrofonteknikker og «Klubb 5» av Reiche - innspilling på Dokkhuset. Metoder for produksjonene blir redegjort for, og resultat blir presentert. Avslutningsvis diskuteres ulike momenter ved prosjektene og prosessen.

How does one approach producing acoustic music for Dolby Atmos, and what can this new audio format add to the traditional music experience? This project explores the sonic possibilities that Dolby Atmos offers for acoustic music production through practical exploration and creative experimentation with various production techniques. A brief overview of the history of surround sound is presented, followed by discussions on different formats and microphone techniques for 3D audio. The main part of the project consists of three productions: "Maid Veahket" - recorded in Nidaros Cathedral, a practical exploration of three compact 3D microphone techniques, and "Klubb 5" by Reiche - recorded at Dokkhuset. Production methods are explained, and results are presented. Finally, various aspects of the projects and the process are discussed.
