Introduction/Background: The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to shed light on the impact of the waiting list on the practice of municipal occupational therapists. There is little research related to influences on occupational therapists' work in general. Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to shed light on whether the waiting list can be a factor that affects the practice of occupational therapists in the municipal health service.
Method: In this thesis, a qualitative method has been used, and four semi-structured research interviews have been conducted with occupational therapists working in the community-based services.
Results: The interviews resulted in four main findings that point to the influence of waiting lists on occupational therapists' practice in the community-based services; different attitudes among the occupational therapists, ripple effects of the waiting list, stress for the occupational therapists and working environment in the municipal health service. The results show differences in the impact on occupational therapists' practice depending on whether the waiting list is short or long. There is also a difference in how the occupational therapists relate to the waiting list.
Conclusion: Based on the data collected in this thesis, it may appear that occupational therapists' knowledge and work area must be made visible among other professional groups in order to reduce the waiting list for the occupational therapy service and in turn reduce the work pressure on occupational therapists. It can also be seen that there is a need for more resources in the community-based services in occupational therapy, in order for occupational therapists to be more satisfied with their occupational identity as an occupational therapist.
