The Gothic Style's Adaptation to Indian History and Cinema: Mahal, Manichitrathazhu and Tumbbad

Abstract

Denne oppgaven vil analysere tre forskjellige indiske skrekkfilmer som alle inneholder elementer av den gotiske filmstilen. Målet med oppgaven er å identifisere disse gotiske trekkene, og underveis se hvordan den gotiske stilen, hovedsakelig assosiert ved vestlige verk, blir tilpasset til Indias unike kultur og historiske utviklinger for å uttale seg om dem. I tillegg vil både typen og mengden vestlig innflytelse i indiske gotikkfilmer bli sett på, med antagelsen om at denne innflytelsen minker sterkt over tid. Ved å anvende litteratur om indisk gotikk og skrekk, vestlig gotikk, og om hver enkelt film, burde resultatet vise at indisk gotikk har endret seg over tid akkuratt som landet selv har gjort, og at spesifikke utviklinger i landet har hatt en direkte innvirkning på filmlandskapet.

This assignment will analyse three different Indian horror films that all exhibit elements of the Gothic film style. The goal of the assignment is to identify and analyse these Gothic traits, and in the process see how the Gothic style, mostly associated with Western works, is adapted to the unique Indian culture and historic developments to make statements about them. In addition, the type of and amount of Western influence in Indian Gothic films will be looked at too, with the assumption being that this influence gradually diminishes over time. By employing literature about Indian Gothic and horror, Western Gothic, and about each specific film, the results should show that Indian Gothic has evolved over time as the country has too, and that specific developments in the country have had a direct impact on the film landscape.
