YouTuber Filmskaperen: En auteurstudie av Bo Burnham

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker hvordan filmskaperen Bo Burnhams bruk av narrativ kommunikasjon kan begrunnes i hans bakgrunn i videoplattformen YouTube. Gjennom en auteurstudie av Burnham, med fokus på narrativ kommunikasjon i hans verker viser den hvordan Burnham fungerer som filmskaper. Dette sammenligner den med YouTubes karakteristiske narrative kommunikasjon for å besvare oppgavens problemstilling. Oppgavens metode anvender ulike tolkninger på auteurteorien, fra blant annet François Truffaut og Peter Wollen. Den tilpasser auteurstudie metoden til oppgavens interesseområde, den narrative kommunikasjonen, hvor den tar i bruk Jacob Lothes beskrivelser innenfor filmnarratologi. Utgangspunktet for auteurstudien er Burnhams YouTube-video i’m bo yo (Burnham 2008) og filmen Bo Burnham: Inside (Burnham 2021) som representerer ulike deler av Burnhams karriere og filmografi.

This bachelor’s thesis will explore how filmmaker Bo Burnham's use of narrative communication can be connected to his background in the video platform YouTube. Through an auteur study of Burnham, focusing on narrative communication in his works, it shows how Burnham functions as a filmmaker. It compares this with YouTube's characteristic narrative communication, to answer the thesis' research question. The methodology of the thesis applies different interpretations of auteur theory, from François Truffaut and Peter Wollen. It adapts the auteur study method to the thesis' area of interest, narrative communication, using Jacob Lothe's descriptions within film narratology. The starting point for the auteur study is Burnham's YouTube video i'm bo yo (Burnham 2008) and the film Bo Burnham: Inside (Burnham 2021), which represent different parts of Burnham's career and filmography.
