This thesis deals with the principle of provenance within archival theory. The principle of provenance is about not mixing archival material together after its creation. The principle is dividied into two sides, external provenance and internal provenance. In archival theory, the principle of provenance is seen as a static principle to help improve efficiency in the archival profession, in practice the principle offers both challenges and advantages. This text explores how the principle of provenance is perceived and carried out in archival practice, compared to how the principle is described in literature on archival theory.
