| dc.description.abstract | For å oppsummere, så ønsket jeg med denne analysen å svare på følgende problemstilling:
«Hvordan skildres soldatlivet og krigsopplevelsen under Vietnamkrigen i Full Metal Jacket (1987) og Platoon (1986)?»
For å gjøre dette introduserte jeg først Vietnamkrigen som tema, deretter snakket jeg litt om krigsfilmer som omhandlet Vietnam i et historisk perspektiv, ved å se på hvordan The Green Berets ble i stor grad avvist av allmennheten for å være propaganda og hvordan filmene mot slutten av 70-tallet, Apokalypse Nå! og Hjortejegeren la grunnlaget for bølge av filmene som skulle komme mot slutten av 80-tallet. Deretter introduserte jeg Foucault sin diskursanalyse som var analyseverktøyet oppgaven skulle bruke. Før jeg først analyserte Platoon og deretter Full Metal Jacket.
For å oppsummere funnene vil jeg si at Platoon skildret soldatlivet og krigsopplevelsen under Vietnamkrigen ved å vise at det var en kompleks krig som bestod forferdelige handlinger gjennomført av amerikanske soldater, men også av unge menn som ønsket eller var tvunget til å tjene landet sitt. Gjennom Foucault sin diskursanalyse så vi hvordan maktrelasjoner førte til splittelse innad medsoldater og at personer med makt var en av hoved-driverne bak krigsforbrytelsene og forferdelighetene som ble gjennomført. Til slutt så vi hvordan gjennom hovedpersonen Chris Taylor, så må samfunnet både klare å anerkjenne forferdelighetene som ble gjennomført og prøve å forsone forholdet med de overlevende krigsveteranene.
For å oppsummere funnene om Full Metal Jacket vil jeg si at filmen skildret soldatlivet på Parris Island ved å vise hvordan basistreningen systematisk de-humaniserte og infantiliserte rekruttene som deltok. Gjennom Foucault sin diskursanalyse så vi nøyaktig hvordan denne de-humaniseringen foregikk og hvilke negative konsekvenser dette hadde for rekruttene, spesielt rekrutten med kallenavnet Pyle. Han mestret ikke regimet basiskolen kjørte, noe han ble både verbalt og fysisk straffet for, både av overordnede og av medsoldater. I tillegg så vi hvordan maktrelasjonene spilte en viktig rolle i denne prosessen. Til slutt så vi hvordan diskursen om de-humaniseringen kunne virke forsonende for forholdet mellom resten av samfunnet og de overlevende krigsveteranene gjennom å vise hva prosessene for de-humanisering gikk ut på. | |
| dc.description.abstract | To summarize, with this analysis I wanted to answer the following problem:
"How issoldier life and the war experience during the Vietnam War portrayed in Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Platoon (1986)?"
To do this, I first introduced the Vietnam War as a theme, then I talked a little about the war films that dealt with Vietnam in a historical perspective, by looking at how The Green Berets was largely rejected by the general public for being propaganda and how the films towards the end of The 70s, Apocalypse Now! and The Deer Hunter laid the foundation for the wave of films that would come towards the end of the 80s. I then introduced Foucault's discourse analysis, which was the analysis tool the task was to use. THen I first analyzed Platoon and then Full Metal Jacket.
To summarize the findings, I would say that Platoon depicted soldier life and the war experience during the Vietnam War by showing that it was a complex war that consisted of terrible actions carried out by American soldiers, but also by young men who wanted or were forced to serve their country. Through Foucault's discourse analysis, we saw how power relations led to division within fellow soldiers and that people with power were one of the main drivers behind the war crimes and atrocities that were carried out. Finally, we saw how through the main character Chris Taylor, society must both be able to recognize the horrors that were carried out and try to reconcile the relationship with the surviving war veterans.
To summarize the findings about Full Metal Jacket, I would say that the film depicted soldier life on Parris Island by showing how basic training systematically de-humanized and infantilized the recruits who participated. Through Foucault's discourse analysis, we saw exactly how this de-humanization took place and what negative consequences this had for the recruits, especially the recruit nicknamed Pyle. He did not master the regime the basic school ran, for which he was both verbally and physically punished, both by superiors and fellow soldiers. In addition, we saw how power relations played an important role in this process. Finally, we saw how the discourse on de-humanization could have a conciliatory effect on the relationship between the rest of society and the surviving war veterans by showing what the processes of de-humanization entailed | |
