This thesis wants to bring out the consequences of neglect for children and young people's mental health. Many of the children who receive help from child protection have been exposed to one or more forms of neglect. Several authors have written about neglect, and what consequences this has for those who are exposed to it. This thesis will shed light on how these consequences affect children and young people's mental health using attachment theory, Bronfenbrenner's developmental ecology model and resilience.
This thesis deals with the various forms of neglect that are usually described in the literature. Neglect of care is a large and comprehensive topic, and due to the limited scope of the thesis, only neglect, physical abuse, psychological abuse and sexual abuse will be mentioned as four forms of neglect. It will also highlight risk and protective factors that can help explain why some children are exposed to neglect, and why some children manage better than other children who have experienced the same.
The consequences of neglect for the child's health, behaviour, attachment and development are presented to a limited extent due to the limited scope of the task.
In conclusion, it will be discussed how the consequences of neglect can affect the mental health of children and young people.
