The purpose of this thesis is to look more closely at how children and young people`s participation is facilitated in practice, and how children and young people experience encountering participation in their interactions with child welfare services. The child´s right to participation is enshrined in legislation such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Constitution, and the Child Welfare Act. Therefore, there is no doubt that the child´s right to participation is a central factor in the work with children and youth, especially in child welfare services. Despite participation being a right, there are many factors that can contribute to or limit how the facilitation of children and young people`s participation is carried out, and whether participation becomes a reality for those involved. For example, age, maturity, and the discretionary judgement of child welfare professionals can influence how facilitation of children`s participation is approached.
This assignment is a literature review and is therefore based on previous research. By utilizing the findings I have gathered, and discussing them in relation to relevant theory, I will address the research question:
“How is participation facilitated for children and young people in child welfare work, and how do children and young people experience participation when interacting with child welfare services?”.
