"A Disagreeable Case": Fremstillingen av Tichborne-rettsaken i Illustrated London News

Abstract

I 1866 kom en slakter fra Wagga Wagga i Australia, tilbake til England hvor han hevdet han var den bortkomne arvingen til den aristokratiske Tichborne-familien som hadde forsvunnet til sjøs 20 år tidligere. Moren til arvingen, lady Tichborne aksepterte slakteren som hennes sønn, men familien hyret en etterforsker for å bevise at dette var snarere en mann ved navn Orton fra Wapping, London. Deretter ble slaktere arrester og stilt til retten for mened. Rettsaken som ble satt i gang fra 1873 til 1874, er et av de lengste rettsakene i Englands historie. In 1866 a butcher from Wagga Wagga in Australia returned to England, whilst claiming to be the long lost heir of the aristocratic Tichborne-family that had disappeared twenty years earlier. The mother of the heir, Lady Tichborne accepted the butcher as her son, but the rest of the family hired a detective to prove that this was none other than a butcher named Orton from Wapping, London. The butcher was then arrestert and brought to trial for perjury. The trial, which lasted from 1873 to 1874, turned out to be one of the longest trials in Englands history. The case was a sensation - it rallied support from the masses and became a popular topic in the media. This thesis will look at how the middle class newspaper "Illustrated London News" presented the case. Topics such as class, religion and gender was an important part of the trial, and through as discursive analysis of the newspaper articles, we can get an understanding of the middle class values relating to these topics.
