Forventninger til kunstig intelligens i norsk media på 1980-tallet

Abstract

I denne besvarelsen undersøkes hvilke forventninger til kunstig intelligens som fremsto i norsk media i andre halvdel av 1980-tallet, med særlig fokus på ekspertsystemer. Besvarelsen tar utgangspunkt i disse tre problemstillingene; «Hvordan ble endringer i norsk arbeidsliv diskutert i lys av forventningene til kunstig intelligens?», «Hvilke etiske dilemmaer/spørsmål dukket opp i diskursen om kunstig intelligens på 1980-tallet?», og «Hvilke konkrete anvendelser av kunstig intelligens så man for seg på 1980-tallet?» Med problemstillingene som grunnlag, ble det gjennomført en kildeanalyse av totalt fem forskjellige kilder, som består av avisartikler og én statlig kilde. Teori og analyse suppleres i tillegg med sekundærlitteratur, bestående av bøker og artikler. 1980-tallet var sterkt preget av en gjenopplivet interesse for KI-forskning, som gjorde det viktigere enn før å opprettholde teknologisk konkurransedyktighet. Til tross for svakt utgangspunkt når det gjaldt ressurser, etablering av større forskningsmiljøer og kompetanse, var Norge like aktivt involvert i diskusjonene og samtalene rundt kunstig intelligens. Disse diskusjonene rommet ofte et mangfold av forventninger til fremtidige muligheter med KI, som i alt var en blanding av ting som frykt, kritikk, optimisme eller nysgjerrighet. Hvilke typer forventninger og meninger man hadde var allikevel avhengig av ens rolle i samfunnet, samt hvilke typer bruksområder som sto på dagsorden. Innen bl.a. medisin var det mye splittede meninger, da bruken av enda litt usikre ekspertsystemer, kunne både være risikabelt og problemløsende. Det oppsto også etiske problemstillinger rundt forholdet mellom mennesket og maskinen. Mange var skeptiske til at slike systemer skulle få en plass inn i arbeidslivet, men var samtidig nysgjerrige på hvordan systemene skulle se ut og hvordan de skulle påvirke fremtiden.

This study examines expectations surrounding that emerged in the Norwegian media in the 1980s, with a particular focus on the second half of the decade. The assignment is based on these three research questions: “How were changes in Norwegian working life discussed in light of the expectations for artificial intelligence?”, “What ethical dilemmas/questions arose in the discourse surrounding artificial intelligence in the 1980s?”, and “What kind of specific applications of artificial intelligence were envisioned in the 1980s?” Using these research questions as a foundation, we conduct a source analysis of five different primary sources, consisting of newspaper articles and one government source. Theory and analysis are further supplemented with secondary literature, including books and articles. The 1980s were characterized by a renewed interest in AI research, making it more important than ever to maintain technological competitiveness. Despite a weak starting point, in terms of resources, establishments of larger research environments and expertise, Norway was actively involved in the discussions and conversations surrounding artificial intelligence. These discussions often encompassed a variety of expectations for future possibilities with AI, ranging from fear, criticism, optimism and curiosity. The types of expectations and opinions held were, however, dependent on one´s role in society, as well as the types of applications that were on the agenda. In fields such as medicine, the opinions were very split, as the use of somewhat underdeveloped expert systems was seen as both risky and potentially problem-solving. Ethical issues also arose regarding the relationship between humans and machines. Many were skeptical about such system entering the workforce but were simultaneously curious about what the systems would look like and how they would shape the future.
