In this thesis, we conducted a financial analysis with a primary focus on the profitability of Baklandet Skydsstation for the period 2018 to 2022. Baklandet Skydsstation is an idyllic café located in the heart of Bakklandet, Trondheim. The café has for a long time been well- established in the area, making it a motivating choice for our study. Here, we analyzed how a well-established business was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and whether they were able to adapt sufficiently to respond to the circumstances under the pandemic.
We examined the profitability performance of Baklandet Skydsstation through an accounting analysis. Here, we calculated various key financial figures for financing, solvency, liquidity, and profitability, providing us with a detailed overview of their financial situation, with special emphasis on profitability. Additionally, we chose to conduct a SWOT-analysis, examining factors believed to have influenced the profitability of the business. The findings from the SWOT-analysis were crucial for answering our research question, as we did not get the opportunity to conduct interviews.
The thesis begins with an introductory section where we present the topic and research question. Baklandet Skydsstation is then introduced, followed by the theoretical part, which is divided into two sections: an accounting analysis and a strategic analysis. The research methodology for the thesis is described next, focusing on the research design and the limitations made in accordance to the research question. Data collection and a discussion on validity and reliability of the study is also reflected upon in the methodology section. The analysis section constitutes the main part of the thesis, where the financial key figures for Baklandet Skydsstation are presented, followed by the SWOT-analysis.
Finally, we attempt to tie all the threads together and conclude the thesis. Our analysis shows that Baklandet Skydsstation experienced a general decline in profitability from 2018 to 2022. This is primarily attributable to external factors related to the Covid-19 pandemic and insufficient adaptation to what was required to maintain profitable operations.
