Tapt og funnet: en studie av deponeringsårsaker og deres sammenheng med Spillingsskatten

Abstract

Denne teksten handler om deponering av sølv i vikingtid. Det er funnet mange sølvskatter, spesielt på Gotland. Teksten vil se nærmere på hva årsaken til dette er, altså hva som var årsakene og intensjonene ved slik deponering. Spesifikt vil det ses på Spillingsskatten i Othem og bruke den som eksempel og analysemateriale. I tillegg vil den sammenlignes med Cuerdaleskatten i England. Disse ble deponert på cirka samme tid, men funnet igjen på helt forskjellige tidspunkt som har påvirket hva vi vet om dem i dag. Teorier som tas opp er oppbevaring av handelsoverskudd, lagringsplass for sølv til videre metallarbeid og rituelledeponeringer. Det skal også ses på tolkningen av sølvskatter som brudepriser. Både Spillingsskatten og Cuerdale skatten har et innhold som tyder på betalingssølv og begge skattene ligger godt plassert med tanke på handel og ferdselveier. I og med at Spillingsskatten er grundigere undersøkt med tanke på funnkontekst og er tilknyttet en gård, kan man si mer om dens eventuelle deponeringsårsaker. Som at det er muligheter for at skatten kan ha vært oppsamlet brudepris, kapital i vente på seilas eller et lager av sølv i forbindelse med en metallarbeidslokalitet.

This text deals with the deposition of silver in the viking age. It has been found a lot of silverhoards, especially on Gotland. The text will look futher into what the reason for this may be, what the reasons and intenions behind such deposition is. Spesifically will the text focus on the Spillingshoard in Othem and use this as an example and analysis material. In addition, it will be compared to the Cuerdalehord in England. These hoards are deposited around the same time, but rediscorvered on compleley different points in time and that has affected what we know about them now. Theories this text will look into are storage of trade surplus, storage for silver for further metalwork and ritual deposits. It will also take a look on the interpretation of silverhoards as birdewealth. Both the content og the Spillingshoard and the Cuerdalehoard indicate silver used as payment and both the hoards are well placed in terms of trading routes. Considering the Spillingshoard is more thoroughly examined in terms of context and its connection to a farm, its possible to say more about the hoard's possible reasons of deposition. Like the possibilities that the hoard is collected bridewealth, capital waiting for shipping or silver in storage in conjuction with metalworking locations.
