Magien og det guddommelige: Aspekter ved Óðinn og seiðr på skandinaviske gullbrakteater fra folkevandringstid

Abstract

Denne oppgaven sammenligner aspekter ved guden Odin som utøver av magiformen seiðr slik dette beskrives i middelalderens skriftlige kilder, og motivene på et utvalg gullbrakteater fra folkevandringstid, med et fokus på transformasjon, ekstase, spådom og krig. Objektstudiene omhandler en A-brakteat fra Nedre Tornes i Møre og Romsdal, to stempelidentiske D-brakteater fra Teig i Rogaland, og en B-brakteat fra Allesø på Fyn. Oppgaven tar utgangspunkt i den materielle kulturens rolle i å konstruere og definere magiens form og uttrykk i jernalderen, og brakteatenes påvirkende makt som eksepsjonelle objekter i et aristokratisk miljø.

This thesis compares aspects of the god Odin as a practitioner of the magic form seiðr as this is described in the written records from the Middle Ages, and the imagery of selected gold bracteates from the Migration Period, with a focus on transformation, ecstasy, divination and war. The object studies concern an A-bracteate from Nedre Tornes in Møre og Romsdal, two stamp-identical D-bracteates from Teig in Rogaland, and a B-bracteate from Allesø on Funen. The thesis is based around the role of the material culture in constructing and defining the form and expression of magic in the Iron Age, and the bracteates’ powers of influence as exceptional objects in an aristocratic context.
