Teori og tolking: Ein gjennomgang av prosessuell og postprosessuell litteratur om gravskikk frå eldre jernalder

Abstract

Gravfunn har lenge vært ei viktig kjelde til kunnskap om samfunn og samfunnsutvikling i den eldre jernalderen. Kva ein forstår om desse samfunna er sterkt knytt til korleis ein tolkar gjenstandsmaterialet, som igjen er sterkt knytt til arkeologiske teoriar. Endringar i teori kan dermed ha påverka endringar i vår kunnskap om samfunna. I denne bacheloroppgåva tar eg for meg den endringane som tok plass i overgangen mellom prosessuell og postprosessuell arkeologi. Dette er gjort ved å fokusere på korleis gravfunn vart brukt til å forstå samfunn og samfunnsutvikling i den eldre jernalderen i Noreg, basert på korleis det vart framstilt i prosessuell og postprosessuell arkeologisk tekst.

Grave finds have long been an important source of knowledge related to society and social development in the early Iron Age. What one understands about these societies is strongly linked to how one interprets the artefacts, which in turn is strongly linked to archaeological theories. Changes in theory may thus have affected changes in our knowledge of the societies. In this bachelor thesis, I deal with the changes that took place in the transition between processual and postprocessual archaeology. This is done by focusing on how grave finds were used to understand society and social development in the early Iron Age in Norway, based on how it was presented in processual and postprocessual archaeological texts.
