Rammer og overskridelse - Sonic Youth og støybegrepet

Abstract

I denne oppgaven forsøker jeg å opparbeide et sett med verktøy som kan benyttes til å forstå, omtale og analysere støy i en populærmusikalsk kontekst, med fokus på bandet Sonic Youth og deres tidlige musikalske materiale. Jeg har utført auditive analyser og hermeneutisk fortolkninger av en del av bandets låtmateriale, med utgangspunkt i tanker om, og perspektiver på, støy fra teoretikere og komponister som Luigi Russolo, Edgard Varése, Ray Murray Schafer, John Cage og Jaques Attali. Caroline Polk O’Meara og Paul Hegartys arbeid med teoretisering av støy har vært sentrale for å strukturere og kontekstualisere disse teoriene og perspektivene på støy. Sonic Youths musikk og virke kontekstualiseres også historisk og politisk ved å se på punkens historiske røtter og utvikling frem til 1980, og knytte Sonic Youth og støydiskursen opp til dette.

In this paper I conduct an aural analysis and hermeneutic interpretation of some of the early works of Sonic Youth, in an attempt to uncover the function and theoretical implications of noise in their music. As a basis for this I draw on the works of theorists and composers such as Luigi Russolo, Edgard Varése, Ray Murray Schafer, John Cage and Jaques Attali, among others. The works of Caroline Polk O’Meara and Paul Hegarty have been central in structuring and contextualizing these earlier works, and in order to contextualize the music of Sonic Youth historically and politically I have also traced the evolution of punk music and its discourse from the sixties’ protopunk to the early eighties no wave-scene in New York, and looked at how Sonic Youth and ideas of noise might relate to this.
