Abstract
Title: Prevalence of clinical symptoms of Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction among adolescent athletes and if it affects the level of physical activity.
Research question: What is the prevalence of clinical symptoms of EILO among adolescent athletes aged 16-19 at a high school specializing in sports in the middle part of Norway? Does EILO lead to a reduction in physical activity?
Method: This is a quantitative cross-sectional study conducted among adolescent athletes at a high school specializing in sports. A digital self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection.
Results: 56 completed the questionnaire. Among them, 48 completed all the questions related to respiratory symptoms. 4 out of 48 respondents exhibits symptoms of EILO which results in a prevalence of 8,33%. 3 out of 4 respondents with clinical symptoms of EILO respond that they “never” or “rarely” avoid intense exertion due to the respiratory problem. All respondents with clinical symptoms of EILO answer that the respiratory problem “never” prevented them from training. 3 respondents with clinical symptoms of EILO answer that the respiratory problem affect their development in sports.
Conclusion: The results show a prevalence of 8,33% with clinical symptoms of EILO. The prevalence is higher compared to the general adolescents in Sweden and Denmark. The results also show that the level of physical activity among athletes with clinical symptoms of EILO is not reduced, but they experience an affection on their development in sports.
