This master thesis’ subject of inquiry is deaf and persons who are hard of hearing and their experiences from attending different types of schools. Main themes of this paper include: participation, learning, communication and facilitation. Qualitative methods, more specifically semi-structured interview, has been used to highlight the themes and main topics of this paper. For this paper I interviewed 5 persons who were either deaf or hard of hearing who had experiences from mainstream schools close to their homes, special schools for children with a hearing loss or schools for the deaf. There was a big age difference between the interviewees, which gave me an opportunity to get an insight in their education and the way it was practiced from 1960s through 1990s.
The interviewees experiences and their stories are in focus in this paper, and these seen against the literature and research within this field indicates that there have been major organizational changes in the schooling system since 1960s. At the same time, the interviewees experiences can be seen in today’s society and recent research within this field. The analysis and conclusions that can be taken from this paper shows that there are major shortcomings with both the primary and secondary school (middle school and high school) education and their attempt on inclusive teaching and facilitation.
The mainstream schools have had most focus on practical facilitation of communication between the student and its teacher. There hasn’t been a specific attempt to use inclusive practices where the students would have an opportunity for social and academic growth. This is specially the case where we can see that their opportunities of socializing with their peers are significantly reduced when the student who is deaf or has a hearing loss is in the same class with children who have normal hearing. Within these classes the only facilitation seems to be the use of technical hearing aids as microphones and the use of an interpreter.
