Climate change is a threat to the existence of ecosystems and the planet at large, which called upon re-evaluation of anthropogenic activities which over years have been contributing to ozone layer depletion and emission of green house gases. Food, and energy, are the center of re-evaluation towards climate change concerns. Food consumption is a major source of green house gas emission. Generally, the production of food, from farm to fork has tonnes of emissions attributed to each stage. Food waste is a global challenge to food security and sustainability. FAO estimates 1.3 billion tonnes of food for consumption is lost each year. As well, there are tonnes of emission and energy attributed to the amount of food lost each year. It is vital to reconsider new food saving technique in each part of food chain, which includes betterment of refrigeration and freezing systems. With increase in refrigeration and freezing systems to about 1.4 billion domestic refrigerators and freezers, consuming nearly 450 kWh each, all together counting to about 14% of the total electricity consumption from the households. This potentially produces approximate 450 million tonnes of CO2eq yearly worldwide. Hence, it is crucial to replace refrigerants with high GWP with natural refrigerants which have lower GWP values such as carbon dioxide (R744), ammonia (R717) and water (R718). And Secondly, improving performance of these systems by having well optimized components and efficient system operation and control.
With the Motive of international joined efforts against climate change crisis, the aim of this project was to design a CO2 Plate freezer test facility working to around - 50°C and follow up the implementation in the laboratory at NTNU. The sizing of components is done using common practice of principles and techniques in order to accommodate the properties of the refrigerant such high expansion for example up to 25% when heated from -10\degree C to 20\degree C. while, other refrigerants at the same temperature increase, expands by 5-7%. Also, the design of the test facility was developed and simulated in Dymola to preliminary validate the sizes by achieving the system behavior required. The possible optimization of the design were shown by addition of other equipment such as sub-cooler which increased the cooling capacity by 2.9 times compared to the system without the sub-cooler. A separator tank added the cooling capacity compared to the system without separator. Analytically, these components added together will contribute to an increase of the capacity up to approximately 3.4 times compared to the system without these components. Also, longer operational life of compressors in the central unit where the test facility will be connected due to the use of a well designed separator tank. The addition of these components adds extra costs, but in long run, it is worthy, due to the improved performance of the system.
Finally, the PID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram), Simulation, 3D diagram of the test facility were produced. Additionally, the BOQ (bill of quantity) of materials to be purchased was prepared.
