Composite and Polymer materials are used in the offshore and maritime industries, however dataregarding their performance after prolonged exposure to the environment is limited. This is mainlydue to the lack of tested data regarding the long-term properties of these materials with regard toenvironmental aging. Therefore, this thesis aims to determine if glass fiber/epoxy laminates, as wellas various polymers, are suitable for offshore and/or maritime use, by analyzing their propertiesprior to, and after accelerated aging. The mechanical loss behavior due to water intake for agedpolymer matrix composites will be analyzed. This will be done by calculating the material’sresistance to interlaminar fracture through double cantilever beam testing and fatigue testing.Interlaminar fracture toughness (GI ), and interlaminar fracture toughness resistance (GIR) willbe used to determine the properties of the material. The use of such tests during the design ofa product allows the user to predict and locate potential delamination in products, and thereforerepair them prior to failure. This master thesis focuses on establishing the approach and testmethods required to get usable data for analysis.
