This master’s thesis investigates the music of the Nordic Noir tv-series. Nordic Noir is known as crime fiction in literature, films and tv-series from the Nordic countries, and has grown into an international phenomenon. The purpose of this thesis is to study the music of Nordic Noir shows and to discuss topics like: What is the sound of the north, and what are musical characteristics of the Nordic Noir shows? In order to study the music and the audio-visual interaction I have analyzed four series from different countries of the north: Forbrytelsen (2007-2012), Broen (2011-2018), Innesperret (2015-) and Karppi (2018-).
The theory chapters contain the relevant background information needed to place the series in a Nordic, melancholic and film music historical context. Then there will be a chapter where I explain the process of my research, and the challenges I encountered on the way.
Chapter 4 shows specific examples from the different series, introduces some theory and discusses musical elements and tools. In chapter 5, I have an overall discussion to compare the shows and points back to the theory. Finally, I have a conclusion where I explain the musical characteristics from Nordicness, melancholy and filminimalism. I also discuss the concept of “Nordic” and talk about examples for further research in this field.
