Background: Each year, around 800 new cases of head and neck cancer are diagnosed in Norway. This patient group can experience major nutritional challenges due to the disease and treatment. Taking care of nutritional needs has always been an importantnursing task.
Aim: The aim of the thesis is to investigate the role of nurses in counseling and facilitating nutrition for patients with head and neck cancer. The aim is to achieve the best possible nutritional status for the patients. Through this the patients can developcoping strategies and remain hope.
Methods: A literature study from spring 2023 based on ten research articles.
Results: Several head and neck cancer patients are already malnourished before the start of the treatment. The results showed that head and neck cancer patients experience multiple distressing symptoms of cancer and side effects of the treatment. This can lead to worsening nutritional status. The findings have shown that screening of nutritional status and the patients nutritional needs, is important to implement individual nutritional actions. Different adaptations can make it easier for patients to ingest fluids and nutrition. Through participation and co-determination in nutritional counseling, patients can build up different coping strategies.
Conclusion: After screening the nutritional status and nutritional needs, nurses can counsel and facilitate for the patients with head and neck cancer to achieve the best possible nutritional status. This can give patients an increased sense of hope and coping during and after admission to hospital.
